CEMEX USA Promotes Road Safety at Bike MS: Los Angeles

PASADENA, CA — CEMEX USA recently promoted road safety for cyclists and pedestrians by holding a Safer Roads Together event outside the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, in connection with Bike MS: Los Angeles 2019, a fundraising bike event for multiple sclerosis, hosted by the National MS Society.

CEMEX, a sponsor of Bike MS: Los Angeles 2019, parked a mixer truck next to the stadium near the ride’s start and finish line, then opened the cab to bike riders and pedestrians. The goal was to give hundreds of cyclists and pedestrians the opportunity to learn first-hand what drivers can see when behind the wheel and give them additional insight into safety while they are on the streets. CEMEX employees also gave out pamphlets with suggested safety dos and don’ts while providing items like lights and water bottles for the riders.

“Safety is a team effort, requiring drivers, cyclists and pedestrians all looking out for each other,” said CEMEX USA Regional President - West Region and Bike MS: Los Angeles 2019 participant Eric Wittmann. “At CEMEX, we are committed to the safety of our people, and we care about our communities. With Safer Roads Together, we are stressing the importance of safety to our neighbors in Southern California, and we hope they take it to heart so they can stay safe as well.”

According to the latest statistics from the National Transportation Highway Safety Administration, close to 800 cyclists and nearly 6,000 pedestrians died in traffic accidents in 2017, down slightly from the year prior.

“We want people in our communities to think about safety whether they are cycling, walking or driving their vehicles,” said CEMEX USA Executive Vice President of Logistics Matt Wild. “Our Safer Roads Together events make safety information easily available, so riders can ask questions and learn ways they can enhance their safety, and hopefully, learn from a new perspective that could save lives.”

CEMEX has held two other recent Safer Roads Together events across the U.S., including a second annual Safer Roads Together event in Miami, Florida. More than 800 cyclists were given safety information and had the opportunity to explore a mixer truck at the Card Sound plant, a rest stop on the Bike MS: Breakaway to Key Largo 2019 ride. In Naples, Florida, dozens of bike riders learned about safety at the Wiggins Pass facility.

CEMEX has hosted close to 10 Safer Roads Together events since the initiative began in 2017. Additional events are planned in Arizona and Texas this spring.
