Flatiron to Enhance Highway Safety and Efficiency Through $73M Bay Area Open Road Tolling System Project

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and the Bay Area Tolling Authority select Flatiron for a $73 million project to modernize toll systems at seven Bay Area bridges. The Construction Manager/General Contractor (CM/GC) project will implement an open road tolling (ORT) system to improve safety, enhance traffic-flow efficiency, and streamline the Bay Area traveling experience.

The high-tech tolling gantry system will detect vehicle information as drivers pass through toll gantries at highway speeds without slowing down to pay tolls. The system will use FasTrak or pre-paid Pay By License Plate accounts for toll payments.

“We welcome the opportunity to collaborate with Caltrans and the Bay Area Tolling Authority to implement latest technology to improve transportation flow in the Bay Area,” said Mike Costa, Flatiron Senior Vice President for Northwest Division. “Throughout the project, we will collaborate with our clients and other stakeholders to identify innovative solutions to any challenges along the way.”

The new open road tolling gantries will be added at seven area bridges — Antioch, Benicia-Martinez, Carquinez, Dumbarton, Richmond-San Rafael, San Francisco-Oakland Bay, and San Mateo-Hayward. The project includes installation of toll system equipment, realignment of tolling areas, modification of travel lanes, and demolition of existing toll booths.

With experience in collaborative delivery, Flatiron will work with the clients during the design process to optimize the design and minimize construction risk. The goal is improved construction safety and quality, as well as higher certainty on final construction cost and schedule duration.
