TUPELO, MS — Commissioner John Caldwell, Northern Transportation District, announces updates to several
Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) maintenance and construction projects in northeast Mississippi.
“These projects in northeast Mississippi along with others in northwest Mississippi will help significantly,” Caldwell said. “[Soon], we’ll add nearly a dozen more as we aggressively work to meet our maintenance challenges. New federal and state funding will help us deal with growing inflationary pressures.”
Overlay and Safety Upgrades in Lee County
In Lee County on U.S. Highway 45, an overlay and safety enhancements project from Euclatubba Road to the Prentiss County Line is underway. Paving work is complete. Crews are performing final striping and grading of shoulders.
The $6.9-million contract was awarded to W.G. Construction of Ripley. Work was complete in late spring 2022.
Construction of State Route 76 in Itawamba County
New construction of a four lane highway designated as State Route 76 or “Corridor V” is on schedule. Corridor V will connect State Route 25 to State Route 23. Grading, drainage, and bridge construction was complete in late spring 2022. All but one lift of asphalt has been placed from SR 23 to just west of Martin Road.
The $97-million project was awarded to Eutaw Construction of Aberdeen. The estimated completion date is summer 2023.
Lottery Funded Paving Projects Underway
The overlay of over 16 miles of State Route 32 and State Route 41 in Chickasaw County from Highway 15 to Monroe County is nearing completion. Crews have completed overlaying SR 32 and SR 41 mainline and are working on driveway aprons, shoulders, and the railroad tie-in at Okolona. The $4.4-million project was awarded to APAC-Mississippi of Jackson and work is expected to be completed this summer.
Work is set to begin on the overlay of the three lane section of State Route 15 in Ripley in Tippah County. The four-mile project should begin mid-summer. The $2.5-million project was awarded to W.G. Construction of Ripley. This project is expected to be completed by winter 2022.
State Route 25 Safety Improvements in Tishomingo County
Safety improvements to intersections and shoulders are underway on State Route 25 from Itawamba County to the Tennessee State line. This project includes the realignment of intersections, addition of turn lanes, updated signage, and access management controls to reduce crashes.
Concrete work and grading for turn lanes and widening areas is nearing completion, and crews are working on new signals in Iuka. Traffic has been swapped onto the partially complete State Route 4 realignment. The box extension and widening at the Tishomingo County VoTech is nearing completion.
The $5.6-million project was awarded to Cook & Son, LLC, of Smithville and is scheduled to be completed by winter 2022.
Overlay of US 45A in Clay County
In Clay County work continues on a base repair and overlay on U.S. Highway 45A from the Lowndes County Line to West Point. Mainline asphalt is complete and the county road and crossover final lifts are underway. Remaining work includes final shoulder work and striping.
The $5.7-million contract was awarded to Falcon Contracting of Columbus. The estimated completion date for the project is summer 2022.
US Highway 72 and State Route 785 Overlay in Alcorn County
In Alcorn County a base repair, overlay, and signal coordination on the five-lane section of U.S. Highway 72 and overlay of State Route 785 (South Cass Street) is underway.
Much of the work is scheduled to be performed at night due to the high volume of daily traffic. Cass Street has been milled and paved. Dig-outs on U.S. Highway 72 are complete, and milling and paving has just begun. Cable is being pulled for radar detection sensors throughout the project.
The $6.8-million project was awarded to APAC-Mississippi of Jackson in November and is scheduled to be completed early 2023.
State Route 25 Overlay in Itawamba and Monroe Counties
Work is set to begin this summer on a base repair, mill, and overlay of SR 25 from State Route 6 in Amory to I-22 in Fulton. The 23-mile project will connect Itawamba and Monroe counties.
The $6.4-million project was awarded to W.G. Construction of Ripley in January 2022 and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2022.
